Since we have lived in Scotland for a year and had not done any Scottish sightseeing at all we thought we had better try to fit it all in before we left! All was off to a great start on Saturday morning as we packed up the house and said our goodbyes, went out to the car and had a flat tyre…. With that sorted we were on our way to Inverness to the famous Loch Ness to hopefully see the Loch Ness Monster. I know there is really no Loch Ness Monster but surely everyone who visits there does hold a little thought in the back of their mind that maybe they will see something…. Or maybe that’s just me.
Anyway it was a lovely day and a lovely drive, we drove around the loch, went down to the water just to make sure it was freezing cold and then we continued onto Aviemore. Aviemore is kind of the capital of the highlands, where all the adventure stuff is. It was very nice, very reminiscent of the Lake District in England I thought. We found a nice B&B, had a stroll around and a nice pub meal.
The next morning we made the lovely drive from Aviemore through to Fort William. It was on back country roads and lovely scenery. Unfortunately it started raining and by the time we got to Fort William, Ben Nevis, the biggest mountain in the UK, which we hoped to see was covered in cloud. We continued on to Loch Lomond, which once again was a really nice drive through the Scottish Highlands, where we planned to spend the night but as it was only 1 in the afternoon and pouring rain we decided to continue onto the Lake District to catch up with some friends. We stayed in a really nice B&B, went to our favourite restaurant for dinner and the next morning went to Jess’s old work to catch up with everyone and say goodbye, then we were off to Iceland!
