A beach somewhere near Hicks Bay. The black sand (volcanic ash?) is...

I had big plans for today, I was going to drive all the way around NZ's north eastern coast along highway 35 to Gisbourne and spend the night nearby, and the trip on the highway through the Maori dominated part of coastline with its deserted volcanic ash beaches and green hilly landscape was memorable. However luck was against me and the relentless rain that has been a feature of the last 3 days has meant that there was a landslide at Tokomaru Bay some 70k's north of Gisbourne and with no clearing of the road in sight I had to retrace my steps all the way back along highway 35 before parking up just the other side of Opotiki. Frustrating to say the least.
