Natalie's Volunteer Trip to Ghana 09' travel blog

“AIDS. Acquired ImmunoDeficiency Syndrome. This is a very serious disease that can kill you! So don’t have sex! don’t share needles! and if you HAVE to, use a condom!” And all the kids are sitting in their chairs looking back at me with blank faces…

In the outreach program today I had to talk about HIV with the children at two different schools (mind you, the ages ranged from 3 to 19 years old). The nurse traveling with us told us that the kids don’t know enough about HIV and its severity, so it’s necessary to inform them now. It was actually pretty cool talking to them and hearing them ask questions, because they were genuinely interested.

Another volunteer left today which gets annoying. You start making friends with some people and then they leave when you’ve finally grown comfortable with them!

We all met up at Mama’s (a bar that we always hang out at) to say bye to her. The good news is that the rest of the volunteers that I hang out with are here til I am, or are leaving later.

Oh! And last night when I went out I tried this drink called aboteshi. It tasted kind of like whiskey but is made from palm oil. It was actually really good with coke. Can’t bring any home though because I’m pretty sure it’s illegal in the states…
