We hitched a ride in the morning with a guy from England who now lives in Australia. We spent about 7 hours with him, riding up the west coast. This was probably my favorite day because the scenery was gorgeous and it was a sunny day. Since he was a tourist, he stopped at many of the lookout points, which was great for us! When he realized what our situation was, he bought us each fish and chips and Coke for lumch. We were happy. We rode with him all the way to Franz Josef Glacier, which we hiked up a ways to see.
After that, we hitched a ride with a group of Americans who are doing a semester of study in Australia. They were traveling around in two campervans for a week during their fall break. It was really interesting to talk to them, because two of them were Christians and very interested in what we were doing. They dropped us off in Hokitika for our last night. Since the woman we stayed with in Queenstown had given us $50, we had enough for our last night's stay. What a blessing that everything fell into place. While we had to sleep outside the first night, we never went hungry, we always got rides, and we always had a place to stay.
