Posing with our VIP bus before we left

One wheel's off...

And the axel's broken...

That can't be good.

Waiting for a ride

Beautiful views in Vang Vieng

A riverside waterslide along our inner tube adventure

We bought "VIP" bus tickets to take us from Vientiane to Vang Vieng. This is funny only because the VIP Bus is not what you would expect. With our luggage strapped to the roof and the bus windows open for air conditioning we were both in great spirits - tuned into our iPods, eating soda crackers and loving Laos and life.

About halfway through the six hour trip we watched in shock as the bus' left rear tire flew off, passed the bus and took out the side of the upcoming bridge. There was no fixing the tire so we sat stranded by the roadside waiting for three hours until another bus (equally luxurious) came along to take us the rest of the way.

We arrived in Vang Vieng feeling relieved to have made it. We checked into our guest house and found our room full of spiders! We convinced the front desk to change us to a less infested room for our two night stay before heading out for some much needed drinks to take the edge off.

Vang Vieng is a little like the twilight zone. Every restaurant serves the same menu and shows episodes of Friends on repeat all day long. We spent the next day floating down the river in a rubber tire inner tube and taking in the amazing views and fun bars along the riverside. At night we enjoyed comfort food and Friends. Not a bad way to spend the day! We decided we'd had enough of the VIP bus and hired a minivan to get us safely through the six hour winding journey to Luang Prabang...
