Tassie Devils, Muppet bird and Swansea
Jan 6, 2009
|Today we left our cosy prison block to go and explore Port Alfred before moving on up the coast.
We was going to go and see the Port Alfred prison until we realised we had already seen it last night on our ghost tour! so our next port of call was the Tasmanian Devil Park.
We got there just in time to see the little devils being fed, aparently they have the strongest bite of any living mammal, a little devil fact for you there!
After this there was a bird show which was pretty cool. It was very interactive with the crowd and you got to see them up close. Most of the animals were rescued and live there now which is nice!
The real star of the show for us though was Kermit the Tawny Frog Mouth! They look like owls but have a frog like mouth and they don't hunt at night they just sit and wait for the food to come to them! and when they get scared they stetch out and make themselves look like a stick! (clever birds!)
After buying a Tasmanian Devil oven glove (as you do!) we were back on the road, not quite knowing where we were going! We stopped at a few places en route but decided in the end to stay at a Backpackers in a little place on the coast called Swansea.
This hostel has was described in the book as a "flashpackers"! and it really was. It was a purpose build building that reminded us a bit of a the big brother type house (and to be fair the woman that run the place really did watch EVERYTHING you were doing!) But all brand new and spotless! but because of this lacked a bit of character, but lovely for a night!
We went for stroll into town to find the supermarket then come back and made some dinner and got chatting to a girl in the TV room for the evening and watched Finding Nemo!
Tired out from the journey so had an early night.
