I AM NOW FIVE LEAVES OLD

The excuse for my being remiss in entering info in My Trip Journal can be blamed on those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. We have been doing the party party since Thanksgiving and it looks like it's not stopping until after Mardi Gra.--Averaging about two a week

The weather ranges from the mid 80's to the low 100's. We had several good rains this month. One 8 hour stint without electric was not at all comfortable ---no AC or ref --bad news.

We have been roaming the Malls on the north side of the river(the ritzy side). They are beautifully decorated. Little Santa stuff-- mostly religious and truly gorgeous. Like America there is an abundance of shoe and clothing stores and double that with accessory stores like handbags etc.etc. I believe I saw over one hundred silver hand bags the size of a suitcase--like two of each in every store.

You can probably tell I like the prices down here and if you ever rode with Lina and me you know I tease at every McDonalds, but did I get a rude awakening at McDonalds in the mall. They wanted 16 rials for a big mack ---that's 8 bucks American. For that same price less one real I can go to an outdoor Brasilian bbq on our side of the river-- where the salad bar is huge and the bbq assortments of meats is endless.. No mickey d for me. Long live the south side and the Brasilian bbq.

The rain has been good for the plant life. The banana tree is now 5 leaves old. The fifth leaf the biggest and greenest so far. Leaf 6 is about five days from opening. My little Caju is finally growing well as is the coconut. Lina's sisters harvested all the fruit from the siriguela and I harvested the roots from five yuca plants. The yuca root is peeled and boiled-- served with a little butter it rivals the potato. It is served as a side in most eateries. It is also very plentiful--requires little care..

Lina is in the process of booking our trip to Recife for the Carnival in February.

The Carnival in Rio would have been fun , but we decided not to fight the crowds.
