Doug about to go snorkelling on Ningaloo

We arrived in Coral Bay to be greeted by the first cool breeze we've felt since Cairns! The town is basically just a tourist resort but at least this meant there were nice (although expensive) places to stay, and decent restaurants.

On Saturday we checked out and headed straight for the lovely beach to explore the delights of Ningaloo Reef. The reef sits literally just off shore, an easy swim from the sandy beach has you drifting above beautiful coral and among hundreds of colourful fish. It was at least as good as the Great Barrier Reef and far easier and cheaper to get to, we didn't even have to do a boat trip. We bought snorkels and swam happily around for a couple of hours looking at loads of different fish and types of coral. We were even lucky enough to see a turtle which came up for air just in front of us, we followed it out to sea for a while but the currents were a bit scary so we retreated back to shore. Later Helen nearly got swept out to sea by the currents, so I guess there are some downsides to independent exploration!
