Today we drove up to the South side of Mt Etna. It only about 20km from where we are staying and you can drive to an altitude of around 2500m above sea level. From here you take a cable car to around 3000m and then by 4 wheel drive to around 3500m. You are then able to walk with a guide. Up here there is steam rising from a number of minor vents and you are quite close to the lava flows. The ground is quite hot to touch and about 200mm down almost too hot to touch. Stangely enough there was still pockets of snow around. Mt Etna becomes a ski resort in winter and it must be interesting to ski on a snow covered mountain that has steam rising from it.
