It's a long drive...!

Crossing the Tropic of Capricorn

The Criterion Hotel - better than hostels and just as cheap!

Steak for dinner in the beef capital

We stayed in Rockhampton, yet another exciting Aussie country town, for one night for a break to the long drive up the coast. On arriving from the south we crossed the Tropic of Capricorn so we are now offically in the Tropics (again). This was the towns main claim to fame although it is also the beef capital of Australia - not really sure what this involves but we thought it was appropriate to have a steak dinner, yum.

It was a dying town, obviously past its prime. It was sad to see all the big shopping malls on the drive out of town the next day, the city centre was dead and almost 90,000 people live there! The mystery of what exactly Aussies do in their spare time continues!
