Okefenokee Swamp

Larry titles this Fargo, Georgia (yes, we finally got out of Florida, but who could tell) but we are really right smack dab in the center of the Okefenokee Swamp, staying at Stephen Foster State Park. Yes, another "Bonnie park" complete with trees, mud and bugs! Also very pretty. We walked a boardwalk through the swamp. It was eerie - the water was high and mirror still, reflecting the trees and bushes. There were no birds and we did not see any fish. The water was pretty muddy, so they may have been there, but they certainly did not break the surface. And very, very quiet.

We also took a boat tour through some of the swamp and learned some of the history of this area. We saw a turtle and many aligators, learned about peat bogs - the way new land masses are formed - saw lots of people in boats fishing, again no birds. The swamp was once a cypress forest swamp that was clear cut harvested. The cypress are coming back now the land has been set aside as a park. And this swamp is the headwater of the Suwanee River - remember when we first got into Florida and searched the Suwanee River for manatees? And didn't see them there. Didn't see them here either.
