Our Stay in Staithes

Although its freeking cold in this country and everything seems to be closed for the winter (we even went for a walk around a lake the other day and the public toilets were ‘closed for the winter’) there are some advantages to travelling off season. On our way south we stopped in the picturesque little fishing village of Staithes, near Whitby and managed to score a three story cottage right on the foreshore, across the lane from Captain Cooks childhood home, for a bargain price.

Staithes was a great little stop. The kind of place which makes you want to take up smoking a pipe and sing sea shanties down at the local. There was a great old pub there, where we ate steak and ale pies with peas and mash and when the kids ate all their food they got to choose from ‘the magic basket’. We wandered the cobble lanes and gull filled hillsides. Oli went crabbing, he didn’t catch any crabs but only as Oli could, he found a holy, battered twenty pound note (Aus$45) washed up on the shore. We took the faded note to the bank and they gladly changed it for a sparkly new one.
