We pulled out of Lake Tekapo with overcast skies and headed thru Burkes Pass and into Fairlie and then Geraldine where a few got off the bus to go white-water rafting...the rest of us carried on making our way thru numerous small towns on the Canterbury Plains crossing NZ's longest bridge at 1743 metres which spans the Rakaia River near Ashburton....we pulled into Christchurch at about 12:30 p.m. and this time we chose to stay at the Rolleston House YHA in the Arts District.....after checking in we headed downtown to Cathedral Square.....today was the day of Sir Edmund Hilary's funeral and it was being broadcast on a big screen in the square and there were lots of people about....while there the clouds got darker and so we headed back to the hostel and got inside just before the rain came down and did so steadily for a few hours....I worked on our travel journal and Barb watched a movie and later when the rain subsided a bit we went out again for a walk around downtown and to get a bite to eat....the winds came up and the rain began to fall again and it actually felt a bit chilly like a rainy fall evening at home so we made our way back to the hostel and called it a night.....
