Foxwoods & A Murder at the Howard Johnson's...
Oct 18, 2007
|The world's largest casino isn't in Las Vegas. It's right here in New England--in Ledyard, Connecticut, to be exact.
The Mashantucket Pequot tribe's Foxwoods Resort Casino celebrates its 15th year in 2007, offering plenty of gambling action that has made it a New England, and a worldwide landmark.
But Foxwoods is more than just 7,000 slot machines, hundreds of table games, Keno, Bingo, poker and horse racing. The resort complex is home to three hotels, more than 25 dining options, the 1,400-seat Fox Theatre, Club BB, a Hard Rock Cafe and the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, which is a five-minute shuttle ride away.
As we pulled into the parking area, we were amazed at the actual size of this property. It is completely surrounded by trees which are mostly in full color at this time of the year. It is truly beautiful here in the fall! Entering by way of the back entrance we were greeted with signs indicating 1 casino to the left, 1 to the right & 1 straight ahead. Noticing the signs for the World Poker Tour we inquired as to which casino is hosting it & were given directions.
That lead us into one casino, go to the end, make a left & enter the promenade, past some unique shopping. We arrived at the Rainmaker Square to be greeted by the 'Rainmaker' himself, a beautiful statue which turns & has colored lights at night. Not much further we arrived at a very full poker room! Texas Hold'em is the game of choice these days & there is no shortage of folks to play. As you may know, I dealt this game for over 30 years. So it was interesting to see how they run their facility. Pretty much the same as Vegas. Lots of excitement in the air!
Leaving the poker room, we were accosted by security & asked to please not take any photos, not allowed. So I only snuck in a couple of more. The interior of this place is just gorgeous. But I think you'll have to make the trip here to see for yourself. Bring lot of $$ though. We only saw machines taking 25cent bets & up. No nickels!
Heading home we traveled the back road, past the Long Pond. What a beautiful drive! I took a couple of my favorite pictures along that shore. It was after 5:30pm & we need to be thinking about dinner before our play. Herb & Darlene are going with us this evening, so after checking in with them we decided to grab a quick bite out. Herb had fish & chips & the rest of us all ordered quiche & fruit. It was very good.
We arrived at the playhouse 15 minutes early, grabbed our seats & studied the program. We learned there are 3 actors & 3 scenes, 2 Acts.
Act One, Scene One, takes place in Room 514 at the Howard Johnson's Hotel, mid December. This is where we learn that Arlene is having an affair with her dentist Mitchell & they are planning to kill her husband Paul. He shows up, she pleads for him to let her go, he declines, so they announce his murder. It plays out from there & is hysterical. Of course, they don't kill him.
Act One, Scene Two, takes place in Room 907 at the Howard Johnson's Hotel, 4th of July, six months later. The affair with the dentist is over & now Arlene & hubby Paul are going to kill him! Oh my, what funny lines & terrific acting this entailed!
After a 15 minute intermission, Act Two & the final scene takes place in Room 1015 of the Howard Johnson's Hotel, New Years Eve, six months later. The dentist & the hubby are here discussing Arlene's apparent lack of love for either of them. So, they are now planning her murder! By hanging. She arrives & the lines here were absolutely hysterical. I laughed to the point of tears! Of course the bottom line is, no one murdered anyone. They just presented us an opportunity to thoroughly enjoy an evening out after a full, terrific day...
