Today we decided to try our hand at Chinese cooking and Barb and I, Paula, Jamie and Kirstie, Stewart, Eilish and Natalia attended the Yangshuo Cooking School. First though, a trip to the local food market to see where all our ingredients were purchased earlier in the day and then off to the cooking school in a small village area outside Yangshuo where we were taught how to make egg wrap dumplings, stir fried pork with vegetables and oyster sauce, duck with pickled ginger and chili, green vegetables with garlic, chicken with cashew nuts and steamed fish. We all prepared single servings of each dish which we then sampled as our lunch......not too bad if we say so ourselves......in the afternoon we walked around the West Street market shopping for nothing in particular and then sat around the lodge playing card games waiting until it was time to head to Guilin to catch an overnight train to Shenzhen and then into Hong Kong. While we played cards, school broke out and we watched the kids heading home......there was a group of two boys and one girl who stopped to play what seemed to us was an innocent game of rock, paper and scissors....the girl lost and in an instant the boys handed off their backpacks to the girl to carry home for them......these kids aren't so innocent afterall...in the evening we headed out for dinner before we headed to the train.......we passed by a shop where a father was holding his newborn..the child was just 2 to 3 hours old..as we congratulated the father the child's mother came bounding out of the rear of the shop with more energy than most of us have after a good night's sleep....and to think she had just given birth a couple of hours earlier!
