Sheets of copper being processed

Copper sheets bundled for sale

Packed up and ready to go!

Today we took a tour of the Morenci Copper Mine. Located in eastern Arizona, it is our nation's largest producer of copper. More than 700,000 tons of rock is moved daily from this open pit mine with mammoth equipment. One of their $2 million haul trucks can carry 270 tons of ore on tires almost 12 feet in diameter. The tour allows you to see the process from taking the raw ore from the ground to finished pure copper being loaded for sale. The tours require appropriate mine attire and are geared for an older audience that can endure 2 ½ - 3 hours of details in the hot sun. Pack along some cold drinks if you go! While this is a very educational field trip, don't go on your birthday, like I did. There are better ways to celebrate.
