Arenal Volcano at a distance

Getting ready to cross Arenal Lake

We opted for the Taxi-Boat-Taxi option, to transfer us from the cloud shrouded Monteverde to Arenal for some up-beat activities.

We'd not slept well at the Qetzal Inn, largely due to jet lag & continuous jungle sounds and were somewhat looking forward to 40winks on the first taxi.

Yes, you guessed it, this ride was even more bone-shaking than the ride up to Monteverde.

The scenery here is captivating and as the minivan & it's occupants roll around uncomtrollably, there are moments of true awe.

The picture perfect Arenal Volcano looms continuously on the horizon, our eventual destination.

After 90 minutes of 'vibration therapy', there is a gentle 30 minute lake crossing, to the Arenal dam.

For some reason, the Ticos (native Costa Ricans) have decided to pave everywhere in Arenal & it's a world away from back-water Monteverde.

We arrived at Volcano Lodge, our home for the next 3 nights, & were totally suprised. When we booked the hotel, it looked like just another mid-range accomodation. It was on the contrary, utter bliss, like staying on a 5-star private complex. Lovely pools, 2 bars & 2 eateries serving traditional fare.

So, tomorrow we are going to try Zip-Lining as it is raining again & we don't fancy the horse riding...
