Today I set off on the Magic bus again to travel down the West coast to Greymouth. Our driver today was Richard and it was a quiet bus -only 11 people so there was plenty of room to sprawl across two seats! I met Nora again, the German girl I'd last seen in Auckland so it was good catching up with what she'd been doing. We had a photo stop to see the Buller River, unfortunately it was looking a bit murky instead of the glorious blue which the driver assured us it usually was. As we drove through the Buller Gorge the weather must have gone through 4 season in one day, just like the Crowded House song. We had rain, grey skies, blue skies, white clouds, sunshine..you name it. When we got to the coast however, the sun really came out and it was a stunning view. It reminded me a little of the Great Ocean Road. We stopped for photos at the Irimawhereo lookout then further down the road we stopped for a walk along the Truman track down to the beach. This was a lovely walk through rainforest with examples of native trees and plants, especially the Nikau palm. Our next stop was at Punakaiki to see the pancake rocks. They're rock formations which look like layers of pancakes, hence the name. More stunning views yet again. I've not been able to download photos from my good camera but there are some shots from my old camera which will give you an idea.

We arrived in Greymouth about 4ish and I'm staying in a YHA hostel which used to be a convent. They still have chapel room -don't think I'll be going anywhere near that though. It's a pretty uninteresting place so I'm only staying one night and heading to Franz Josef tomorrow. All the guys on the bus are going on the brewery tour!
