Olive Baboon (Nyani), Lake Manyara NP

Elephant (Ndovu), Lake Manyara NP

The rain continued all last night, accompanied by thunder and lightning. The power went out around 1am and wasn't restored before breakfast, when we finally realized the likely source of the outage was that the lodge had turned off the generators overnight.

Lake Manyara is one of several soda lakes in Tanzania. We do quite a bit of game viewing and finish our picnic lunch before the weather strikes again. A dust storm swirls up on the horizon. Godfrey drives a bit over the park speed limit of 50 kph to get to a sheltered spot where he can close up the vehicle. He battles the wind holding what has become a 40-pound metal sail (the roof of the center section of the Land Cruiser is completely detached) as fat droplets of rain turn the dust to mud. Luckily, we have seen almost everything the park had to offer, missing only the lions who sleep in trees here.
