|We had an early start this morning as we were on the 8am ferry. Our only other choices were the 5.45am or one that got into Wellington after midnight - so we couldn't be fussy really. If anything, we should have booked in advance for the popular times hey! There are two main ferry companies that run crossings between the north and south islands (Bluebridge and Interislander). They don't just take us tourists and the locals across they also have trucks and they shunt cargo trains onto the ferry one side and they chug away happily at the other end.
Leaving Picton (and the South Island) behind - we passed the scenic bays and inlets of the Marlbourgh Sounds ... arriving in Wellington three hours later.
Wellington is New Zealand's capital city - now how many of you thought it was Auckland hey! Hands up!! Auckland is definately the largest out of the two but that is about it. Welliington has been nicknamed "windy Welly" and it wasn't long before we experienced it. Wellington is a harbour town with the main city centre right there and suburbia spreading up the surrounding hills. The harbour was formed by flooding of the valley which was caused by an earthquake in 1460.
We drove right into town off the ferry trying to find somewhere to stay. It wasn't easy. The roads were confusing - we were going in roundabouts, the drivers drive right behind you making it difficult to make any instant decision and you can't find parking. Parking is a HUGE problem in the town. We did finally find parking and a place to stay for the night at the YHA Backpackers.
We roamed the streets in the afternoon popping into the Te Papa Museum but after an hour we had to leave - it felt like all of Wellington had decided to visit aswell and it was a bit overcrowded.
We did, however, find a cinema complex and for the first time in absolutely ages - in fact we can't remember the last time - we went to the movies. We went and watched "The Shaggy Dog" - well the trailer on the telly made it look really funny and we wanted a good laugh! It did give us a giggle but was also rather silly / stupid. But we enjoyed the super size popcorn!!
