we walked the barkhor circuit today around the jokhang. the circuit is just a path through the city streets of the tibetan quarter in lhasa. the pilgrims walk in a clockwise direction around the sacred temple to gain merit, and we joined them (as observers). the circuit is lined with stalls and vendors selling anything a tourist or pilgrim might want or need from tibetan clothes and shoes, yak butter, prayer wheels and flags, souvenier trinkets, dvd players, fruit and spices, you name it. it was a grand experience. even though we were the only foreigners in sight, we certainly were not made to feel like foreigners. the pilgrims were happy to have us.
