Well it's been a while since we have updated the site...hope you weren't too worried about us! You won't be after you see what we have been up to!
After finishing our China trip and our visit to Hong Kong, we arrived into Hanoi, Vietnam. We had 5 days on our own before meeting up with our second tour group so we decided to take a few day trips of our own to see the scenery. This tour to Tam Coc was beautiful. The local people took us on a wooden boat trip through steep rocks and shallow waters. We even ducked through 3 caves through the karsts. The lady and fellow rowing our boat (yes, it took 2 of them!) spoke French so I was able to ask a few questions and converse with them. They were very friendly on the way out...however, we soon observed the hard sell of local embroidery and souvenirs on the return journey of others passing us! I guess they have a captive audience while you are in their boat!!! We bought our guides a beer and a coke for their efforts - although we also noticed that they didn't actually drink it. In fact, I believe the cans were "recycled" to be used for the next gullable tourist. Clever.
Despite the sales technique...we really enjoyed the quiet, serene scenery and were glad we went. It made a nice break from busy Hanoi with it's hundreds of motorcycles and honking cars.
Such happy campers we are!
