the Italian Boot

The Italian 'mainland' leg of our travels took us from the ferry port of Villa San Giovanni at the 'toe of the boot' to Bari on the Adriatic Coast and consumed almost two of the three months driving adventure.
It had been fun.

The general plan was to criss-cross the southern part of Italy up to Herculaneum near Naples on the Mediterranean side and Vieste on the Adriatic side. Spending time around the 'heel of the boot' was a major ambition. We achieved our goal and were fascinated by the amazing old towns and villages along the way, amazed at the massive olive groves and intrigued by the antics of many drivers.

As beautiful as the Mediterranean coast was we found the Adriatic more to our liking in visual appeal and with far less congestion. Historical sites were not as plentiful but were still significant.

Places like Herculaneum, Alberabello, Matera and Craco were far more than expected as were the hosts at many of our 'bases' like Scilla, Maratea, Andrano and especially Pimonte. We were warmly welcomed.
Anna and Alfonso at Pimonte were more than perfect hosts, we class them as good friends.

Weather wise we were extremely fortunate with minimal rain, moderate temperatures and beautiful sunny days. On the few occasions that a swim was considered one touch of the Mediterranean or Adriatic made us think otherwise. Maybe things will improve on the Albanian side.

Our rented Punto performed extremely well through a few 'airborne' episodes and any number of goat tracks that would have tested any good four-wheel-drive vehicle. Fantastico!

Overall we had a great time and a wonderful experience which the next leg of our travels will be hard to match.

Arrivederci !
