Alaska 2014

Premium Traveler
Welcome to our 2014 trip to Alaska, our fourth. This presentation gives a general overview of the trip. We’ll be revisiting most of our favorite places and we’ve included some new ones too; we’ll also be visiting with friends and family.
We leave home on June 2nd and return September 26th.
The route north is different. In 2002 we went north through Nevada, Idaho and Washington, crossed into Canada at Osoyoos, BC and went north through central BC to Prince George, then west to Prince Rupert where we boarded a ferry on the Alaska Marine Highway. We made stops at Ketchikan and Juneau, and left the ferry system at Haines. We went north from Haines to join the Alaska Highway at Haines Junction, YT.
In 2004 we traveled north along the Pacific Coast from Northern California through Oregon, followed I-5 north through Washington and crossed into Canada at Abbotsford, BC. We traveled north through eastern BC to Prince George and again boarded a ferry on the Alaska Marine Highway. We made stops at Petersburg and Sitka, and left the ferry system at Haines.
In 2008 we traveled north through Utah and Montana stopped at Glacier NP, crossed the border into Canada at Cardston, AB. We stopped at Waterton Lakes NP, Banff, and Jasper then headed west through Prince George to Kitwanga, BC where we turned north up the Cassiar Highway and, with a stop at Hyder, AK, joined the Alaska Highway at Watson Lake, YT.
This year we’re going west through Needles and Bakersfield to I-5 and north on I-5 to cross into Canada at Vancouver, BC. From Vancouver we’ll travel north stops at Whistler, BC (new) and Quesnel, BC for a side trip to Barkerville – a restored historic mining community (new), through Prince George to Prince Rupert where we’ll board the Alaska Marine Highway. Our Marine Highway stops will be Ketchikan and Juneau with a side trip (without our rig) to Glacier Bay (new).
This trip we’ll leave the Marine Highway at Skagway rather than Haines. The route from Skagway to the Alaska Highway is new, has a very steep climb from Skagway, and connects with the Alaska Highway at Whitehorse, YT.
At Whitehorse we’ll go north on the Alaska Highway to Delta Junction, AK where we’ll turn south on the Richardson Highway which will take us through the Alaska Range to Glenn Allen. This is a new segment for us and we’ve been told it has very spectacular scenery.
From Glenn Allen we travel west on the Glenn Highway to Anchorage and continue to Homer. At Homer we leave the trailer at the RV Park and take the truck on the Alaska Marine Highway to Kodiak (new). Returning to Homer, we travel back through Anchorage, with a stop in Seward and continue north to Denali NP.
At Denali we will take the trailer 29 miles into the Park for a three night stay at the Teklanika River NP Campground (new). The road is gravel which we’ve traveled on park buses 4 times in our previous visits. We’ll dry camp (no hookups) and we’re not allowed to drive inside the park; we use the park buses to get around while we are there.
From Denali we go north to North Pole, AK (near Fairbanks). We’ll take the truck north on the Dalton Highway (the Haul Road) to Wiseman, a small historic mining community (about half way to Prudhoe Bay) where we’ll stay in the Boreal Lodge, the owners are friends from previous visits. We’re hoping to see the Aurora, though we’ll probably be a few days too early.
From North Pole we start back to the lower 48 with a stop at Chicken, AK for a side trip with our truck to Eagle, AK (located on the Yukon River near the Canadian Border.) We’re going the Jasper NP through western Alberta (new).
At Jasper NP we’ll travel south on the Icefields Parkway through Cranbrook, BC to cross the border at Eureka, MT. We’re planning to complete the Bitterroot segment from last year’s trip (cancelled due forest fires).
We’ll be in Montrose, CO the weekend of September 20th for the 60th reunion of Brian’s High School Class. From there we’ll head home with a stop in Cortez to visit Brian’s Mother (she celebrates her 101st birthday on September 14th).
