Canning Stock Route Trek 2010

John travel blog
Welcome to my blog for our Canning Stock Route trip. I will try to update it daily when we have internet access. We are spending over 7 weeks travelling through the outback. While the Canning Stock Route is our primary destination we will also be visiting Birdsville, Oodnadatta, Alice Springs, Palm Valley, Kings Canyon, Ayers Rock, The Olgas, The Gunbarrel Highway, Halls Creek, Bungle Bungles, Broome, The Gibb River Road, Kununurra, Katherine, Darwin, Litchfield National Park, Tennant Creek, Mt Isa, Winton, Longreach and then back to Brisbane. We get back in time for the 3rd State of Origin match. My travel partners include: Peter and Carol Bacon, Peter Barnett, Reg Morgan (until Kununurra), Lee Cameron (until Yulara), Jenni Cameron (Alice Springs to Yulara) and Keryn King and Wendy Ferris who join us in Broome. Our transportation comes in the form of two diesel Toyotas, a GXL and a Troopie. Both are equipped with electric winches. The Troopie is our work horse carrying fuel, water, camping gear, tools and spares plus our recovery gear. The GXL will have our food and personal gear. We were originally going to cross from Birdsville to Alice Springs via the Simpson Desert. That route had to change after all the Qld rain this year as the Simpson Desert is closed for 2010. Imagine a desert being too wet for travel! So now we are travelling via the Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks to Alice Springs.
