Mac's 2012 Alaska RV Trip

Herbert travel blog
Welcome to my Alaska RV trip journal.

After approximately 8 months of research and planning I will be starting my trip to Alaska in my RV on May 31, 2012. I started out by reading other trip journals online. I then made a list of places and things I wanted to do and see. After that I used Microsoft Streets and Trips to plan my route. My trip will last approximately 90 days.

In preparation for the trip I ensured all maintenance for my RV and tow vehicle were completed and up to date. After reading and hearing about individuals whose tow vehicle suffered paint and window chips I searched and found Coastline Cover Company in Rancho Cucamonga, CA and purchased a tow vehicle cover that covers the front end, up over the hood, and to the top of the windshield. Hopefully this will eliminate any damage to my tow vehicle.

I made reminder cards of the RV plus tow vehicle's height, width, length, and weight in US and metric measurements; mph/kph conversions; distance in miles and kilometers; gas prices in liters and gallons; celsius to fahreneit conversions, and money conversion (US/Canadian). I put all this along with my printed route and daily activities into a 3-ring binder for ready reference to use in conjunction to my "The MilePost 2012."

Many individuals purchase the 2 for 1 coupon saver book for Alaska; however, I will be traveling by myself and my small dog so that would not work for me. I found that many of the things I want to do offer discounts for early booking so I reserved them and almost all my campsites in advance to ensure I would be where I needed to be on certain dates. Where possible, I chose campsites that offered dog walking while I would be away for the day like the 13 1/2 hour Denali Back Country tour, ferry boat day trip from Haines to Juneau, Brooks Falls in Katmai NP for bear viewing, and the White Pass & Yukon Skagway-Carcross Round Trip Rail/Bus Combo trip. I will have to find a kennel in Fairbanks for my four-day trip on the Dalton Highway to Prudhoe Bay, then flying to Barrow and a flight back to Fairbanks.

I will be traveling in a 2005 Alfa See Ya motorhome towing a 2009 Saturn Vue.
