|Woke Thursday to more blowing winds. Uh oh, now what? After deliberating a bit we ultimately decided to just go for it. It's not so much our driving in the wind that bothers us, it's the other drivers! The 5'er tracks really well but tall vehicles like motorhomes & truckers seem to have a bit more issue when the winds are high. As evidenced by a terrible accident we encountered in the middle of nowhere. A semi apparently lost control on the narrow two lane road and hit a small pickup truck head on. The pickup was already loaded on a flatbed so we couldn't actually be sure, but you could see the skid marks and the cab of the truck was pretty much on it's side with no left wheel, jammed into a rocky edge. The police were directing traffic & several men were under it working on the wheel/tire issues. Our traffic lane was blocked of course. I was so involved in trying to figure out what had happened that I forgot to take pics. And, my camera was in my lap which is the case most of the time when traveling. This is the third time we have encountered a serious, head on collision on a narrow 2 lane road since beginning our traveling. And two of them have been in Arizona. So, if you are out & among them, please drive carefully!!!!
Today's journey took us just under 5 hours and about 3 hours. We started out on S34 which connected us to Hwy 78 into Blythe. The road was narrow and 'ribbony' but the scenery was quite lovely. Interesting shapes & colors in the surrounding mountains and miles & miles of green crops all along the Colorado River. We stopped for a few minutes and watched them harvest lettuce. Looked like back breaking hard work to me! Makes you realize what it really takes to keep the population of this country fed. Oh my!
In Blythe, California we picked up I-10 for a short distance before eventually traveling north on 95 into Nevada. The winds died down as we moved along, making for a nice easy, if not longer than normal, drive. When we dropped off the freeway onto Boulder Highway in Henderson Onyx came flying up to the front seat sniffing like crazy. She buried her nose into the air vents, screaming at the top of her lungs. I think she knows when we are getting 'close' to home, lol!
It didn't take us long to get pulled in & set up. I'll be spending a few days cleaning off the bugs from the front of the truck and dusting inside the rig after this trip! Anyone interested in helping???? This morning we are heading over to help the kids work on their new home for a few hours so guess I'd better sign off for now. Just wanted to let everyone know that we arrived safely and are looking forward to seeing many of you while we are here. We're leaving again on Monday morning to take Mom home but we'll be back in 5-6 days after she's settled back in. There's a snow prediction for a couple of the days we're going to be in Ely but I'm praying that it's a light one. As you may know, my one request is that we try to be where it's 70 and sunny at all times, lol! Have a great weekend everyone...
