You know, we have a loose itinerary but sometimes even that feels a bit structured. So today we stopped in Providence RI and had a surprise lunch with my cousin Sally Strachan. Yes, even I have relatives around the country. It was a quick and nice stop. She has a fantastic home which was built in the 1840's. We both agreed it was the nicest home of that vintage we had ever been in. After lunch we went off the schedule. I wanted to drive the water route of RI. We went over two big bridges and the second one landed at Newport. We got off and parked (not an easy task) and took a 2 hour guided van tour of this fabulous historic city. A great deal of firsts for the country took place in Newport. Of course we needed to see the famed Newport Harbor and WOW! We have been in hundreds of marina's in our lives but never one that housed boats and racing sailboats that were each over 100 ft. There is a sail boat race in town this week and sail boats from all over the world are here. We decided to stay the night in a campground a couple of miles a way. Had a wonderful seafood dinner at another marina restaurant up the street. We were belatedly celebrating our 38th anniversary with money Shirley's mother and step father gave us. This fabulous meal only cost us $40 and they threw in the creme brulee desert! We would highly recommend to all who love the water and history to come to Newport Rhode Island. It is a stop we won't soon forget and will come back when we have a longer time to stay and explore. Enjoy the pics.
