Through the ages

12th May

Mothers day was spent quietly, after a chat to Steve & Nome we head off into town. Blu has offered to take us in his hire car. Driving through town heading to the weir we noticed that not many shops are open. Living in the ACT we are use to every thing being open 7 days.

Chinchilla Weir is a concrete faced earthfill structure and is the only storage for Chinchilla Weir Water Supply Scheme. The weir was officially opened in 1974. There is free camping for a maximum two nights. A shady relaxing place, quite popular with lots of happy campers. Water skiing, canoeing, swimming and fishing are some of the activities enjoyed. A top rate bird watching spot [the feathered kind] with over 50 species sighted.

Leaving the weir we head back into town, Elaine noticed that Salty's was open. After a lunch of fish and chips we head back to Doug's. Tonight we are having Stew and Damper cooked on the fire. The stew is a combined effort Elaine made the damper. A great end to an enjoyable day.

14th May

A quiet day yesterday with a walk to the front gate and lots of R&R. Lots of wind and rain last night but everything stayed dry. Only some wet shoes.

Today we set off to Miles with some ominous black clouds overhead. Arriving at the Historical Village & Museum the weather looks like it will hold and we will be able to have a rain free stroll through the village.

The museum was first established in 1971 by dedicated volunteers with an amazing vision for preserving local heritage of the pioneering era.Spending a couple of hours we had to give in to our growling stomachs and head into Miles for lunch. Spotting $10 lunches at the Windsor Hotel we head there. After lunch and a walk down the main street we head back to Chinchilla. The historical village was worth the entry fee and one of the best that we have seen.
