Hi All

Airlie Beach and backpackers left behind as we travelled further north 1st stop being Townsville. Townsville is a military town (Army) plus they claim to be the unofficial capital of North Queensland. It has a large port and is the terminus of the train line from Mt Isa. We have been here before and one of our pleasures is to take a ferry to an island about 10kms offshore named Magnetic Island, named that way by Captain Cook in 1770 due to some interference with his ship’s compass.

On arrival at the island a bus takes us to the north at Honeymoon Bay where there is a pub, the Marlin Bar, one of our favourite lunch spots. It did not disappoint this trip. Perfect weather and we had a great day.

Next stop was the small coastal town of Cardwell. Cardwell was flattened by the eye of Cyclone Yasi in 2011. Located on the Hinchinbrook Channel it now has a great atmosphere following the substantial rebuild after the cyclone. It’s a town that we have always just driven through but this time we spent the night and fully explored it. It’s very pretty and has some great facilities for the residents.

Moving northward again we arrived at Cairns. This stop is longer to allow for final preparations for heading west plus we have friends here and we have already had lunch with neighbours from home who are here house sitting. We have a few things to do before we leave but that’s the next journal. We are at our favourite caravan park called Coconut and it is the best park in Australia and is busy this week due to school holidays.

And so the adventure continues.

Love and best wishes
