KAPOORS ON THE ROAD

We’d never been to Fresno before and I don’t know if we would ever have made it there had it not been for the fact that my husband’s brother and his wife were visiting the US and Canada for the first time. My sister-in-law has a sister who lives in Fresno with her family and we had suggested that before coming to Canada, our overseas guests should start their visit in Fresno before we took them to Canada.

Ajay and Neeta spent three weeks in Fresno after their arrival from India and made side trips to Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks before visiting the Grand Canyon. We had arranged to meet them in Los Angeles so they could see the city’s famous sights, so they had taken a bus from Fresno to LA to hook up with us.

We drove north to Fresno for a three-day stopover because we’d met Neeta’s sister and family in India a few years ago. We had a great stay, relaxing and enjoying terrific homemade Indian cooking and going for long walks to wear off some of the calories.

There’s really not much to see in Fresno; it’s a city that provides services and housing for the half million involved in the massive fruit and vegetable industry in the San Joaquin Valley.

It was quite a feat getting all of our luggage into the car for the long drive north to Canada. Thank goodness we were able to leave one of our suitcases with Audrey in Mesa, because there wasn’t an inch to spare after we packed the four large suitcases, four backpacks and other odds and ends into our Volvo XC station wagon. We had purchased a net and installed it between the passenger area and the trunk to ensure that nothing would decapitate us in the event of a sudden stop.
