Fogarty & Nowak Alaska Road Trip travel blog

We are now on the road to Alaska

Dawson Creek was a lot bigger town than any of us had expected complete with a Walmart and McDonalds. Left about 11am and the drove to Fort Saint John which was also a lot larger town than we had expected out there in the middle of nowhere. From Ft. St. John to Fort Nelson was exactly as I had expected….wide open rolling tundra with few places to stop and not much change in scenery along the entire 240 mile route. A overcast sky with periods of heavy rain did not enhance the trip. However the rains were a blessing to the local residents and firefighters who had been battling a wildfire for over a month. We passed through an extensive burned out area with smoldering pockets but no flames. Believe it or not by the time we rolled into Ft. Nelson at about 5pm we all gave a shout of joy to hit a traffic light, the first sign of civilization in about 4 hours. We even slowed down hoping it would turn red before we reached it. It was definitely time for us to stop and regain our sanity!
