Lost Lake

260 miles thru Colorado mountains makes for a long and tiring day, but once past Denver traffic it turned in to a beautiful drive. Rt 285 between Denver and Buena Vista is very special. It is a two lane road mostly which didn't afford me many opportunities to pull off and take pictures, but there were plenty of great pictures to be taken if I could have stopped. Rt 50 between Poncha Springs and Gunnison is also very nice and includes Monarch Pass at 11,312 ft elevation. This was the first big Rocky Mountain pass over which I've driven the Dutch Star. It is a very long uphill grind and long steep downhill. For the most part it did quite well. I did find out that on a hot day it is best not to run the engine A/C while climbing that kind of a mountain. It began to overheat maybe 3/4 of the way up the mountain. I pulled over and let it idle for 5 minutes, turned off the A/C, and everything was fine after that. I started the generator and ran one of the roof top A/C to keep cool. The exhaust brake is just amazing! I only had to use the air brakes every so often when the engine RPM's got a little to high. I arrived at Tall Texan Campground at around 3:30 pm which gave me time to set up and explore the local area a little bit. I found a nice National Forest campground on Blue Mesa Lake maybe 25 miles west of Gunnison with first come, first served sites (no hookups). I'll probably stay there when I leave this campground. Tall Texan campground is a very nice, well maintained campground with lots of trees and very pleasant and helpful management. I would definitely come back here again and will stay here beyond the 3 days I've already paid for if they can find me space. This is the nicest private campground that I've stayed at so far, and it only costs $23 per day including full hookups. Less than $20 per day if you stay for a week or longer.

I left early heading up Rt 730 (Ohio Pass Road) toward it's intersection at about 10,000 ft with Rt 12 (Kebler Pass Road). The pictures tell the rest of that story. This road can easily be driven with a car until you get near Ohio Pass where I would think you would be more comfortable with a high clearance vehicle. It could be driven with a car, but not mine. Rt 12 (Kebler Pass Road) can easily be driven in a car from one end to the other.

Colorado is the most amazing place. After Rocky Mountain National Park I thought it just couldn't get any better. Well, if not better, this area is certainly it's equal. It seems that every where you go there are spectacular views, beautiful rivers and streams and wide open spaces. So very different from the east. Colorado is going to see a lot of me during the forseeable future. Jeff and Linda living in Denver, and being rather central to a lot of other great stuff, makes it very likely to see a lot of me.

Today I have to tend to several bits of business. I have to arrange to have my mail forwarded, hopefully to this campground, and if not to the local post office. Several loads of wash in my rigs washer/dryer combination. I wouldn't have purchased it, but now that I have it, and have used it several times, I wouldn't want to be without it.

One of my neighbors at the campground invited me to join them to watch the local firework show. I did and we had a great time. They live in Boulder City near Las Vegas, and have a large ranch near Kanab, Utah, where his daughter lives. They have invited me to visit them at their ranch some time on the way to California. He builds and races really fast cars at the Bonneville Salt Flats near Salt Lake City and has invited me to join him and his crew for the race which starts around the 11th of August. I think that would be a lot of fun and another new and exciting experience. He's going to try to get me a full hookup site for my rig where he and his crew park his 42 ft rig. These cars go very, very fast.

I have much more to see in this area and I'll continue to post the pictures of these adventures. This is way better than Disney World.
