Since we had 3 days off in a row this week, we decided to head up the coast. It was raining, but it would be raining if we sat at home as well! Our first stop was at the Main Street Café for breakfast – one of our favorite places. I had a couple of eggs and their ‘to-die-for’ blueberry muffins – mm-good!
At Newport, we visited the Oregon Coast Aquarium. We have visited MANY aquariums in many states, but this one is the very best presentation we have seen anywhere! The displays were brightly colored with animal life and excellent lighting. There were 3 tunnels, where one could walk through huge Bull Kelp beds with Leopard sharks and huge sting rays. The Tidepool touch pool was delightful. I had never realized that Abalone were a single shell mollusk. We were also able to touch sea cucumbers. Between rain showers, we visited the outdoor Aviary to watch pelagic birds up close. What a treat!
After the aquarium, we were hungry, so went to Mo’s, which is famous for their clam chowder and chili, which was excellent. We walked the harbor and got to see the sea lions hauled out on the deck.
In Tillamook, we were just in time to get to the Tillamook Cheese Factory as they were cleaning up. We sampled the cheese and enjoyed their delicious ice cream before they closed. We have to go back tomorrow to purchase our cheese, and probably have more ice cream.
Got a hotel, walked down the street for a quick burger, and enjoyed the evening relaxing.
