After setting up camp yesterday we drove about 35 miles to view the Upper & Lower Mesa Falls. Larry & I were first here in 2006 and Mom, Joyce & I visited the falls in 2010. Other than Niagara, these are my favorite Falls. I love how close you can get on the boardwalks & viewing platforms at the Upper Falls. You can hear & feel the thunder and power below your feet, almost makes you want to jump in and try to ride it to the beautiful river below. Well, almost! Upper Mesa Falls is roughly 114 feet high and 200 feet wide. The average volume of water falling over the falls varies between 600 & 1,500 cubic feet per second. This equates to 387 million to 967 million gallons per day! Today the property was decked out with plenty of fall color making our visit even more special. Beautiful!
In case you are visiting Yellowstone and would like to see the Falls, you would exit the West Entrance on U.S. 20, pass Island Park & continue to the intersection of Highway 47 in the Targhee National Forest. Make a left turn on the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway.
These two spectacular waterfalls are located on the Henry's Fork of the Snake River. Viewing of the 85 ft. Lower Mesa Falls is from the Grandview Campground and Overlook, less than a mile below the Upper Fall parking area. Our Golden Age Pass was accepted so there was no fee for us today, although donations are gladly accepted. The historic Mesa Falls Lodge has been restored & is now open for visitor information. There were a few other folks there today but basically the busy tourist season has ended. We spent a good hour just breathing in the wonderful fresh air & feeling the mist as it drifted toward the platform. Onyx loved the trip as well. I tell you, I could come back here every year! Love it :):):)
P.S. I am sorry so many of my recent posts have so many photos but I can't seem to narrow them down any better. I am literally taking hundreds a day! Would love to pick up a few photography classes out here on the road but I sure love taking them anyway. Maybe during our winter break, for Christmas??? Anybody listening LOL :)
