Today we attended the first annual Sanson Ranch Celebration hosted by The Friends of Wind Cave National Park. The day's events included ranger-led tours of the Sanson homestead and the buffalo jump. A hike to the new addition's highest point, offering a spectacular view of the southern Black Hills, left from the ranch at 9:30 am. It was advertised that the strenuous 4-mile round-trip hike would climb 500 feet and take around 3 hours so we passed on that part of the days events!

At 5pm a chuck wagon dinner was served. Rick & Peggy were in charge of that portion of the program & we found it admirable that they donated their time & effort to the event. The smoked pork was wonderful as were all of the side dishes. Love their chuck wagon & it made for good pics with today's lovely landscape & the darkening skies this evening.

Music was provided by our buddies, the Ramblin’ Rangers. Afterwards, President Teddy Roosevelt re-enactor Joe Wiegand told about his life in the West as the President who helped establish Wind Cave National Park in 1903. The man is amazing! He spoke for over an hour with not one note & I understand he can do 3-4 hours if needed! He has been re-enacting Teddy for the past 5 years and is currently performing in Medora, ND for the summer. He also performed at the White House when the Bush's were in office. You can see a video of that performance on his website here:

Teddy Roosevelt at the White House

Be aware that his portion of the program is approx. 14 minutes into the video. You can drag the video forward to his part if you like. I believe you'll find it worthwhile!

Attendance was great for today's event & was important as this fundraiser will support the Friends group in their efforts to assist the park in opening the 5,556 acres the park acquired last September for public visitation. The Sanson Ranch property is a wonderful acquisition for the park & we are so glad that we are now members of 'The Friends of Wind Cave'. Hopefully you'll get to visit this beautiful area soon!
