Salento to Popayan, Colombia

A driving day today. Left Salento at about 8:00am and drove through mountainous countryside past Cali and south to Popayan, arriving there at about 3:30pm. There was a little rain today and the country, although very green, was not as spectacular as the driving days previously from Bogota. Eleven presidents of Colombia have come from this town. It is a very busy shopping town and there are lots of people around. All of the old town has whitewashed buildings and around the main square branches of all the banks in Colombia are situated. The main square has many trees and was very full of locals as a religious event was taking place. We watched for a while and then realised that it was a celebration of the 2 new saints. Some teenagers approached us in the square and asked if they could have their photo taken with us - so funny! We wandered around the town centre but, apart from the cathedral and main square, there really wasn't anything to see (lucky we are only staying one night...). We had our eye open for a restaurant for dinner but only found two open and they were both too fancy for what we had on and a bit pricey. It started to rain and so we headed back to the hotel buying some strawberries on the way. Quite close to the hotel we spotted a small local seafood restaurant which was open until 7pm, so after an aperitif, we returned there just after 6pm and had a really nice meal and were back to the hotel by about 7:30pm, sat and chatted for a while then went to bed around 11:00pm.
