Matanuska Glacier

Cool and cloudy this morning. I left the campground at 09:20AM and as soon as I got out to the main highway it started to sprinkle. Fortunately it only lasted for about 15 minutes.

I drove the Seward Highway north stopping at the Tesoro station in Girdwood for diesel – 70.614 gallons at $3.939 a gallon. I departed there at 10:05AM. I stopped at Beluga Point at 10:30AM and left at 11:00AM. It looked like the tide was starting to come back in but I did not see anything – in the water or the cliffs overlooking Beluga Point.

From Anchorage I took the Glenn Highway northeast towards Palmer and Glennallen. I stopped at Fred Meyers in Palmer at 12:10PM for a couple of things and left at 12:20PM. The weather had improved and the sun was shining from Anchorage on with only a few clouds.

The drive from Palmer to Glacier View was very scenic. It was also very narrow and winding in spots with some pretty steep drop-offs with no guardrails. I took it nice and slow through here and used the pullouts whenever I got any traffic behind me.

I arrived at the Grand View Café & RV Park in Glacier View at 14:05PM. 50amp E/W/S. I got set up and started a load of wash. I then drove back towards Palmer to the entrance to Matanuska Glacier, about 8 miles from the RV Park. I drove out to the parking area near the glacier but I did not hike out to where you can stand on the ice – probably close to a half mile hike.

I returned to the RV and put in a second load of wash. I then went in to the café and had their fish and chips for dinner. After dinner I could see four Dall sheep up on the mountain with my binoculars but they were too far away for pictures. Twice in the evening power went out in both the RV Park and the cafe.

155.5 RV miles today – 3 hours and 50 minutes driving time.

21.1 SUV miles today.
