August 24th and 25th

Today we travel on the ferry from Shelter Bay to Gelana Bay across Arrow Lake then down hwy 6 through Nakusp, New Denver and Kaslo. The Friday market was on in New Denver and we just had to stop and look at all the local wears. Unfortunately the wind was up and it was very smoky and dry and all the talk was of concern about fires spreading under these conditions. This is an area that has been hard hit this year and the fire season is not over yet. Did a little shopping had lunch and headed on to our destination, Bancroft’s cabin at Queens Bay. We have been guests before so we know what the view should like across the Lake but unfortunately it does not look like that during our stay. Smoke from fires is thick and while we sit out the first evening after we arrive we chose to sit inside after that. On Saturday we head to Nelson for the afternoon and shopped (for Bill this time) and enjoyed the very unique ambiance that is Nelson (think late 1960’s early 70’s). There are lots of outdoor and hiking equipment stores, restaurants, and local art galleries and shops to look in and it is always a good time browsing the shop windows; lunch at the diner and afterwards a short tour of Nelson and on the way back we stopped at Red Fish Creek and watched Kokanee salmon come back into the stream to spawn. A fascinating event to see as they are bright red in colour and the river has a spawning channel for fish to swim back to that special point in the stream. We have a lovely dinner and easy evening. It has been lots of relaxing, dog walks and catching up on 4 months of our travels and their busy lives. They are always generous hosts.
