We arrived in Donna Texas on December 3. The RV Resort, Victoria Palms, is huge. The book says it has 820 sites but we think there are more than that. There are several hundred sites just for mobile homes. It has a professional health club with two spas, huge pool with a pool side bar, laundromat, post office, fitness centre, restaurant, 12,000 sq. foot ballroom (which is part of a 35,000 sq. foot cental clubhouse. The new 10,000 sq. ft. Activity Building for woodworking, crafts, etc. opened in March of 2004. There is also a hotel with suites on the property.
When we were out driving on the 4th, we saw a black cloud forming in the distance. We drove to try to find out what it was. They were actually burning off a sugar cane field. The cloud grew and grew and you could see leaping flames in the field. Then as suddenly as it began it was out. Amazing! We checked out one of the local flea markets and didn't find anything we needed. We stopped at the Cracker Barrel Store and Larry bought an Elvis ornament for the Xmas tree.
We just hung out and relaxed on the 5th. On the 6th we headed to Brownsville TX and South Padre Island. Most of the countryside continues to be barren and dusty. We took Hwy 281 there and it gets close to the Rio Grande several times but you never see it. Just a high fence on top of a levee with many "Border Patrol" vehicles driving on the levee we assume looking for border jumpers. There are a lot of poor areas and a lot of empty buildings, sometimes whole strip malls. We had lunch at Steamers on South Padre Island. We weren't quite sure of the place as it looked like someone had just driven through the front door as it was an all wood door. When we walked in there were a bunch of empty tables, no patrons, but a bartender. We looked at the menu and decided to stay and discovered that they had just boarded the open windows and doors for the winter season. We had lunch and it was very good. It's probably very beautiful on a sunny day but it was cloudy and cool so there wasn't much happening. The south end of the island has RV parks, large hotels, lots of restaurants and some humongous souvenir stores.
We didn't do much on the 7th, 8th and 9th. There wasn't much to see in Donna TX. We did however purchase a new zoom lens for our Canon camera so we will be able to provide some better "Zoom" shots. We are now off to Corpus Christ and Padre Island Texas.
