Newport RI hosts more Mansions than any other city. This was another summer playground for the wealthy of the wealthy. Yesterday we toured two of the 5 we purchased tour tickets for (there are 12) in close proximity. Our first was the Breakers owned by the Vanderbilt family who made their fortune in railroads and steamships. WOW! This place is huge and opulent inside. It is hard to explain and we were not allowed to take pictures. It is 4 stories with a gigantic grand hall. The Breakers has 70 rooms and when in use had 40 servants. Situated right on the water, The Breakers rivals anything we have ever seen including the Biltmore Mansion and the Hearst Castle. The tour was self guided but we had headphones that told us about each stop. Next was Chateau-sur-Mer. Smaller than The Breakers but just as opulent with incredible wood work. Here we had a guided tour by a docent. We dodged rain drops all day but never enough to keep us from being out. A wonderful lunch was next at a resturant on the ocean when it really began to rain. Then back to the camper for a while to rest and Shirley worked on learning her neat new camera. We hit the road again to see the new Clint Eastwood movie "Trouble with the Curve" which was excellent. It's a baseball movie with an terrific story line that kept Shirley's interest. For me all of it was made more interesting because Eastwood played an aging scout for the Atlanta Braves and was very realistic. After the movie we had the greasy pizza we've been craving for a while at a local place that was very popular based on the number of people there and the take outs we watched them prepare. It rained steadily thought the night but so far we haven't floated away. 3 more mansions await us today and we are looking forward to it. Enjoy the pics.
