First view of New Zealand

Christchurch Cathedral

Museum of Canterbury

Suddenly we are in a new country which is very exciting! We landed in Christchurch about lunchtime on Tuesday and found a decent hotel. It was a bit of a shock having no car and being real backpackers again, carrying the bags was hard!

Christchurch is a lovely city, very English. It was established as a Christian community when the English first came to New Zealand so it has a lot of nice old buildings and is definately more English than anywhere we went to in Australia. The Cathedral is the focal point and it is generally a beautiful place. It's very cold here though compared to Australia so we had to go shopping yesterday for hats and scarves!

We have been for a couple of walks around the gardens and went to the museum today. There isn't much to do here really so we've just been relaxing and sorting out the plan for the next couple of weeks. We have hired a car for tomorrow so we'll be doing a quick circuit of the south island before Doug's parents arrive next Monday.
