Red Dog Saloon

Located at the foot of grand mountain peaks on the Gastineau Channel, the town is proud of it;s Mendenhall Glacier and Juneau icefields at it's front door. The sunrise was 4 am, I forgot to tell you that the sun rises very early and sets very late here at this time of year, so we have been stuffing our windows with pillows to block the early morning light after waking up early for the first few mornings. It reminds us of when we were in the Baltic Sea years ago. Juneau is a very rustic town with one great saloon called the Red Dog Saloon; everyone make a trip there during their visit to Juneau. It is right in the town and can be seen from the ship.

Our tour today took us up the icefields to Mendenhall Glacier, the hatchery and then Red Dog Saloon. We went on a nature hike, exploring the trails of Mendenhall Glacier Recreational Area and viewing the beautiful glacier. We went to the salmon hatchery where we learned how the state replenishes their salmon stock each year. This is just one of many hatcheries in Alaska charged with replenishing the salmon after the bears are through eating! Finally off to the water to see eagles and their nesting areas. Our final stop was the Red Dog Saloon, the old time piano player dressed in old miner clothes, the saloon itself was rustic and the food was rustic as well. Dad had a Tredwell Beer Brat cooked in Alaskan amber beer and I had a cheeseburger. Oh well! you can't have everything. Should have stuck to beer.

After dinner, we went to the first show put on by the singers and dancers called was really good; showcasing many different dances in the non stopping dance show. We really enjoyed this show.

By the way a very interesting fact is Juneau is the State Capital and is the only Capital in the World you can not drive into or out of. It is nestled in between mountains and there are no roads ...only able to access Juneau by plane or ship. Cool!
