Ni hao from Jean & Ollie
May 7, 2005
Well we have seen the Terra Cotta Warriors!! Of course they were simply amazing. Ollie took lots of videos and I took pictures. This is when I really wish I had our Nikon D100 camera with me for extreme close-ups. Raj has a nice camera with good lenses so he will share his pictures with us. Also we bought a book showing everything. We got to the museum early ahead of most of the other people and had the first building to ourselves. Later it got pretty crowded. The site where the warriors were uncovered was found by some farmers digging a well. One of the farmers was at the museum to sign the books we bought. We stayed at the museum all morning and then stopped for lunch in the countryside and then got to go into a typical farmers house to look around.
After about a one hour nap, we were taken out for a tour of the city and a stop at the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. It is a parklike setting with buildings with buddhas in them with a central Pagoda in the middle. Very pretty and peaceful.
We were then treated to a special dumpling dinner at the Shaanxi Grand Opera House. This consisted of 19 different dumplings each filled with a meat, seafood, and/or vegetables. We had sauces to dip them in. There was also one with pineapple, one with apple, and one with walnuts which were sweet dumplings. To drink were had tea, beer, soda and warm rice wine. The dumplings were delicious. One of the best meals so far in my opinion. By the way, we are offered beer with every lunch and dinner, so Kenny you would be right at home! After our wonderful dinner, we were treated to a Tang Dynasty Music and Dance Show. This really was a great show.
Yesterday when we arrived in Xi'an we stopped at the city wall and bell tower. In the 14th century, this city's first emperor had a wall with a moat built around the city and it still stands today. It runs 9 kilometers around the city. Xi'an is the largest city in NorthWest China and has a population of 7 million people.
Well it's 11:15 p.m. and I really must go up to our room to bed.(Ollie is already in bed.) We fly out at 10:10 a.m. tomorrow morning for Shanghai.
Love to All!!
