September 23 – Visit to Crater Lake NP and Trolley Ride around the Rim

We reserved seats on the 10:30 AM trolley ride around the rim. The 40 miles took an hour to reach the Rim Village at 7,000’ elevation from our Prospect, OR campground.

The rim was covered with several inches of snow. They had received 9” at the beginning of the week which is very unusual. The moisture was probably from the same weather front that dumped inches of rain on us in Tillamook.

Anyway, the rain and snow put out the fires so we could enjoy the vistas of the lake from the rim. Last week the lake was not visible due to smoke.

Taking the 2+ hour trolley tour was a good decision. The trolley was allowed to drive on the closed section of the west portion of the rim road that was under construction. Our ranger interpreter on the trolley was excellent.

The lake was much bigger than I expected (5 miles across) and was a gray color under the overcast sky – not the light blue color that is shown in photos. It is the deepest lake in the US at 2,000’ created 7,000 years ago after the largest volcanic eruption known created a deep cavity that the surrounding mountain collapsed into.

We choose to not take any hikes due to the snow and returned to our campsite.
