Shirley's Trip to Queensland 2016 travel blog

I woke up early this morning & was ready to leave by 8:00 am when my neighbour mentioned that he thought the Newell Highway was closed. I spent about an hour on the computer & finally established that it was indeed closed by flooding between Forbes & West Wyalong, exactly where I wanted to go.

Not only that, there were also other roads closed which meant I needed to make a big detour via Cowra & Junee. I could have stayed in Dubbo but the forecast is for more rain so it seems things are going to get worse rather than better.

The Newell Highway is the main route between Melbourne & Brisbane so I had to contend with lots of heavy trucks on roads which weren’t designed for them but the countryside is magnificent with lots of green wheat paddocks & a patchwork of brilliant canola crops.

I got within 60 km of today’s destination of Narrandera when I came across a sign in the township of Coolamon advising there was no access to Narrandera. By this time I’d had enough & Alexander was carrying on, telling me he’d had enough too & fortunately Coolamon has a little caravan park. It’s not great but better than the side of the road.

We’ll see what tomorrow brings.
