Mt. Marathon

Start

Our day was totally consumed by the Mt. Marathon race here in Steward, Alaska. It is a race that began a hundred years ago as a bar bet.

One fellow bet another that he could run to the top of the mountain and back down in an hour. If you look at this magazine cover you can see the town of Seward in the background which will give you a good idea how steep and difficult this run is. They run 3 groups, youth, men and women. There were about 500 runners in each group, so you can imagine the excitement.

The course is about 3 miles up and 3 miles down with an elevation gain of over 3,000 feet.

We watched all of the races. I got to where I could follow the leader of the race all the way to the top with our binoculars. This race is held every July 4th.
