Larry & Lee Ann's Journey travel blog

I love this small park in Sturgis, nice sculptures...

Pretty day for our drive...

One of the many saloons in town, not many bikes have arrived...

Oops, here comes the rain...

There's a rainbow in town...

Pulling in at home, the rain is stopping & the rainbow seems...

Wednesday we made the trip into Sturgis to Fort Mead VA Hospital for Larry's orthopedic surgeon appointment. Even though the bone seems to be misaligned a bit, they have decided to not do any type of surgery at this time. They said this particular break heals in 3 stages. Arterial (blood) growth first, followed by fibrous (collagen) second and finally mineralization (bone). The doc says he can see slight arterial & fibrous action happening so wants to wait until his next appointment on August 25th before doing anything more. He believes we will see progress in those two areas and a bit of mineralization by then. We hope he's right. In the meantime, Larry is walking with his steel bottom boot & using crutches for longer distances. It is not painful which is a good thing. His age is a big factor in the bone not healing within the normal 8-10 weeks. Looks like it will be considerably longer. But all in all, he's doing fine. He just won't be taking any hiking trips for awhile. Thanks for all your inquiries and concern, he appreciates it.

On our way back to Custer we hit one of the worst rain storms we've seen in awhile. It was in sheets making it very difficult to see. At one point it started to hail and that's when we pulled off to the side of the road. It wasn't long before we were able to get going again though & by the time we arrived home it was barely sprinkling. Our yard was pretty flooded though so sure glad it stopped when it did. Our friends Van & Rose were having a family reunion/torchlight party & it had started at 4pm. We were concerned that it got rained out but I guess the storm split right around them and they only got a 5 minute light sprinkling. So we fed & walked Onyx and went for the party/jam session. There were tons of folks there and plenty of good food & music. I took a ton of pics so think I will post them tomorrow. Wish you had been there too, you would have enjoyed it....
