|Landed in Mauritius just ad night was falling and grabbed a taxi into Mahebourg to the Hotel. I must say, Le Bamboo was not what I had expected. From the pictures on the booking site, I had envisioned a small resort on the water with some bungalows, and the reality was quite different than that. The rooms were no more than 12' x 12' ...that INCLUDES the bathroom and the walls were paper thin. There was aircon however, and with the stickiness and poor airflow in the rooms, it was a must.
While it wasn't necessarily what I had envisioned, it was not without its charm. In fact it had this sort of Rick's Café Americain-Casablanca feel to it. While it wasn't on the beach, it was right on the River in Mahebourg and had some nice views of the waterway and surrounding mountains. It was convenient to the bus, and Privid and his family who run the place just couldn't be nicer.
Without a guidebook, I was a bit lost the next day at what to do so I just walked dosn to the bus stop and grabbed the first bus that came...the 18 to Flacq. Actually, I was hoping to go to the local beach at Blue Bay, but when I said, "Blue Bay" to the conductor, he just took my fare and said nothing. After about ½ hour, I realized I was on the wrong bus, but I was enjoying the scenery and the small seaside towns along the way.
I took it to the end and got out at Flacq Center. It really wasn't all that different from Mahebourg, but the bustling crowds had a sort of India with training wheels feeling to it. (Based on what I know of India, this assumes Mauritius is a tricycle, and India one of those huge dump trucks they use in mining with tires 10 feet tall.)
After a little bite to eat and a walk around town, I headed back to the bus station and caught the 18 back to Mahebourg. As school was letting out, the bus was much more crowded on the way back, but it was a nice way to get a sense of the daily life of Mauritius. Upon arriving back into Mahbourg, I found the bus to Blue Bay and took the 15 minute ride to the beach. What can I say, the water was beautiful, but it was quite built up with villas and hotels, and not really all that pretty. Still the 80 deg water was nice for a dip.
