Restaurant where we had dinner from the bridge

We rose early and got on the road in anticipation of the drive taking longer than the distance would indicate. As anticipated the first part was slow as we negotiated the bends on the way north on California State Highway 1. Only a delusional engineer could call this a highway. We joined highway 128 and it wound its way through redwood forests for the first 15 miles. It then improved somewhat, but only sporadic patches had shoulders. The change in temperature was quite remarkable. It was 17 when we left the coast and we did not climb very far till it was in the low 20s, then suddenly, we noticed, it had jumped to 29 which became a fairly constant 31 with the odd 32 appearing. As we descended towards the 101 it again went through a paroxysm of bends before joining what could truly call itself a "Highway" we then made rapid progress and reached Petaluma in time for lunch. While the early rise may not have been necessary, we were glad we had as we assume we missed some of the heavier traffic.

We got checked in at Petaluma in a large, busy campground. We had a quick lunch then set off to a nearby factory outlet complex where we made some purchases. We started off together, then spilt up and met later and finished off the tour together.

We set of in pursuit of somewhere to have dinner and found a spot close to the river where we enjoyed a good meal. We had a look at the river and the buildings surrounding it. We gassed up the truck at a place which had a car wash and we made the mistake of trying to use it. After we got in to the building, which took a degree of manoeuvring, we discovered the arch moved around the vehicle and it was scarcely wide enough, as a result it hit our truck and stopped working, so we were left with half a soapy truck and the task of extricating it from the car wash. We decided that the truck could stay dirty till we got home.

Then we came back to the campground and Christine gathered the laundry together and we took it down to the laundry where I left her and came back to wash the soap off the truck and do a few other things.

When Christine came back we put the laundry away and watched a BBC programme on the PBS network. The cable offering here is better than we have had for quite a while. Too bad we are only here for the one night.

Tomorrow we are on the last leg of our southward journey and should reach Sacramento.
